Public Charter Schools

Why Charter Schools may not be right for Maury County

Public charter schools are public schools which operate under different rules for things like curriculum standards and they have more flexibility when it comes to the qualifications of teachers and teacher pay.

The attempt by American Classical Academy (an out of state organization with no track record in Tennessee) to launch a charter school in Maury County in 2023 was voted down by our school board and the decision was upheld by the State Public Charter School Commission.

In the future, if there is sufficient support from parents, students and teachers, and the charter were designed to serve a specific group of students not adequately served by existing schools, we might consider a local charter school.

Tax-Payer Funded Vouchers

Why vouchers for private schools hurt Maury County Public Schools

Tax-payer funded vouchers remove public funds from public schools and send those funds to private schools.  The problem is that the operating costs of public schools remain fixed, even as there is less money to fund them.  Additionally private schools do not have to follow the same rules and are not measured using the same tests, so there is absolutely no indication that the private schools receiving this added tax-payer money will provide better education than the public schools.
